Richard Ferro, DO from Multidisciplinary Pain Management Services recently began performing interspinous process decompression with the new Vertiflex procedure at Eaton Rapids Medical Center (ERMC). This procedure takes pressure off the spinal nerves by implanting a spacer through a small tube the size of a dime to relieve the symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis, an increasingly common disorder affecting the aging population. Symptoms include reduced mobility and chronic leg and back pain. ERMC is the only facility in the mid-Michigan region performing this surgery.
“This minimally-invasive outpatient procedure is performed in less than an hour and decreases the need for opioid medications to manage symptoms. Patients have reported almost immediate improvement and full relief is expected around 6-8 weeks postoperatively,” explains ERMC Director of Outpatient Services Loni Thomas, RN.
The Superion spacer device is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In addition to interspinous process decompression, Dr. Ferro performs many other surgical procedures at ERMC, including nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulator implants, pain pump implants, and epidurals.
